The Berlin project developer Trockland is transforming the former GDR broadcasting site on Rummelsburger Landstraße into the urban creative district FUNKYTOWN. On approximately 49,000 m², a versatile campus is being created with eight new buildings and the historic Block-E. Eight renowned Berlin architecture firms – Julian Breinersdorfer, GRAFT, Grüntuch Ernst, KSP Engel, Thomas Hillig, LAVA, LXSY, and TCHOBAN VOSS – each design one “Station.” The urban planning concept by KSP Engel combines architecture, culture, and social diversity as a blueprint for the city of tomorrow. Already 50% of the spaces are leased for uses ranging from coworking and gastronomy to education. FUNKYTOWN is a flagship project along Berlin-Southeast’s innovation axis, creating new creative spaces on the Spree in Treptow-Köpenick.
Station E by LXSY marks the entrance to the district. An elegantly undulating metal façade with volants wraps the upper floors like a flowing garment, giving the building lightness and movement. The base of reused brick contrasts with the dynamic façade and references Berlin’s industrial architecture. This combination of reused metal and brick follows the principles of circular construction and introduces the idea of sustainable transformation into the district. The open ground floor encourages urban interaction. Station E turns circular construction into an optimistic statement, blending industrial coolness, urban vibrancy, and a new aesthetic of sustainability.
