JEWISH CENTER FRAENKELUFER

The Fraenkelufer Center connects security, openness, and community through a confident yet inviting architecture. Cubic volumes follow the historic block edge, open toward the canal, and create varied spaces for gathering, exchange, and retreat. A central terrace above the hall serves as an identity-defining outdoor space, while the flexible hall below links art, culture, and community.

The outdoor areas are organized in three levels: an upper terrace functions as a café and outdoor gallery, a naturalistic middle slope features grasses, herbs, and playful elements, and a lower plaza in front of the synagogue includes a water feature and seasonal Sukkah. The kindergarten offers diverse play and retreat spaces, a herb garden, and practical facilities such as covered stroller parking.

Sustainability is integral: green roofs with photovoltaics, minimally basements, timber-hemp construction, reversible prefabricated components, natural ventilation, and sun shading reduce energy needs and mechanical systems. Facades in light umber tones with ceramic accents link old and new buildings, giving the ensemble a cheerful, accessible character.

Security measures are subtly integrated: the main entrance is at the Fraenkelufer, while other accesses open gently into the block. Bicycle and disabled parking, seating, calisthenics elements, and slacklines encourage interaction and urban connectivity.

The Fraenkelufer Center serves as a vibrant hub for contemporary Jewish culture, uniting tradition and modernity, fostering encounters, strengthening community, and demonstrating how architecture can harmoniously combine openness, security, and sustainability.
