Tempelhofer Feld is Berlin’s green lung, a symbol of freedom, democratic participation, and a unique space of urban openness. In the face of climate change and a growing population, we do not want to develop this valuable open space but instead transform it sustainably for the future. Our vision, “A Sea for Everyone,” combines ecological resilience, social integration, and sustainable urban development into a holistic concept that preserves the site’s historical significance while opening up new perspectives.
At the center, a vast “sea of meadows” will emerge—a natural space supporting biodiversity, rainwater management, and ecological variety. Here, microhabitats for plants, insects, and birds will counteract species decline and promote a stable microclimate. Surrounding the meadow is a vibrant “garden ring” providing areas for recreation, education, sports, and communal activities. A newly designed “movement ring” with separate bike and pedestrian paths will improve mobility and host events such as the Berlin Half Marathon.
Four well-designed access points will connect the field to the surrounding neighborhoods via “piers,” creating new viewpoints and places to linger. A strengthened north-south axis will better integrate the field with the city and link it to the new “Südflanke” district. This mixed-use, low-car neighborhood will be developed on existing sealed surfaces through targeted densification, providing urgently needed housing without affecting the field itself.
The climate strategy of our concept focuses on de-sealing surfaces, nature-based rainwater management, topography modulation, and climate-adapted vegetation. Diverse plant layers, climate forests, and bioretention areas will improve soil structure, water balance, and carbon sequestration. In this way, a dynamic ecosystem will emerge that adapts to changing conditions.
“A Sea for Everyone” demonstrates how city and nature can work together harmoniously in times of climate change—a defining open space that unites history, democracy, ecological responsibility, and a socially sustainable future.
